As a forward thinking and innovative company, Alamo Rent a Car saw the amount of travellers increase in the 1980s and decided to do something about it. In order to accommodate the influx of new and excited visitors to Florida, Alamo Rent a Car decided to construct the first of its many state-of-the-art rental plazas. The plazas, designed to be an ultra-spacious environment, were first seen with the opening at Tampa, Florida, in 1982.

The largest plaza was also built that year in Orlando Florida, becoming the world’s biggest rental facility. Three years later, in 1985, Alamo Rent a Car developed more ideas to make renting a car easier for the customer. The new customized rental agreement was introduced along with Instant Alamo Rent a Car, a system that stored individual rental information for each customer for instant reference. These programs seem typical of car hire today but were revolutionary when Alamo Rent a Car first introduced them.

Understanding that customers needed peace of mind on the road, Alamo Rent a Car began using its price and coverage option for all customers on April 19, 1990. This option changed the way rental car companies operated concerning collision damage waivers. The brand new ‘Waiver Savers’ gave Alamo Rent a Car clients three choices of price and coverage options that were specific to their exact requirements.

Alamo Rent a Car again led the pack when it started to offer its services on the internet in the mid 1990’s. In 1995, it was the first car rental company with a real-time booking option online. At that time, Alamo allowed customers to find locations, select vehicles and view company rates. The website soon expanded to include a membership-services section, options to check the weather, fun games for children on trips and directions to popular destinations. By 2005 the company would be the first to give its clients the opportunity to check-in online.

As of now, Alamo Rent a Car operated 159 self-service kiosks at 65 U.S locations, an achievement that has earned the company Budget Travel Magazines 2007 “Extra Mile Award.” A reflection of the company’s willingness to give all it can for its customers.
